Somewhat unexpectedly, running has become a large part of my life. I first tried it in 2019 as a cardio replacement for swimming when I no longer had access to a pool or swim club to train with (gym renovation, global pandemic), skeptical that I’d stick with it given my strong aversion to the sport growing up. But as I started exploring neighborhoods through running and have it become an increasingly meaningful social activity, I came to really enjoy it. Below is a small effort to visualize my relationship with running through the numbers.

Inspired in part by GitHub and an old Wait But Why blog post that I recall from time to time, here’s the last five years of my running history. You can tell that 2024 was my biggest year of running yet, I took some time off at the end of 2023 when I was injured, and I switched my long run day from Saturday (2022) to Sunday (2024). I’ll keep updating this periodically as I keep running and I’m excited to see how 2025 stacks up!
